More School Hours Don't Guarantee Better Test Scores

The Washington Times article is focusing on the relationship between school hours and test scores...
Time isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Students who spend more hours in the classroom aren’t guaranteed higher test scores, and many nations that outpace the U.S. on standardized reading and math assessments keep their children in school for much less time, according to a report from the National School Boards Association.

CONFERENCE-World Conference on Physics Education

Welcome to the World Conference on Physics Education

   We are looking forward to seeing physics educators, teachers, researchers, and policy makers from around the world at this very first World Conference on Physics Education to be held in Istanbul in July 2012. The conference was initiated by Groupe International de Recherche sur l'Enseignement de la Physique (GIREP) and theInternational Commission on Physics Education (ICPE) – Commission 14 of the International Union for Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP). It is being sponsored by GIREP, ICPE and the Multimedia in Physics Teaching and Learning (MPTL) group and endorsed by American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), Latin American Physics Education Network (LAPEN) and the Asian Physics Education Network (AsPEN).
The vision for 2012 World Conference on Physics Education is to follow a global participative process before, during and after the conference. The Conference will be structured to help foster collaborations on physics education research and development which can transcend national boundaries. The goal will be reached through working sessions which will develop actions plans that strengthen the teaching and learning of physics at all levels and in many countries.

   The 2012 World Conference on Physics Education will be a concrete step forward in global cooperation. Envisaged as a series of conferences with a four year periodicity, it would be a working conference with follow-up actions that presumably would carry over to the following conference.

The Inner Life of a Cell

   Harvard University selected XVIVO to develop an animation that would take their cellular biology students on a journey through the microscopic world of a cell, illustrating mechanisms that allow a white blood cell to sense its surroundings and respond to an external stimulus. This award winning piece was the first topic in a series of animations XVIVO is creating for Harvards educational website BioVisions at Harvard.

Planet Science Web Site

A nice source for students and teachers!

About;

"Planet Science was originally launched as a Millennium project nurtured by NESTA and previously funded by the Department of Education and Skills; in 2010 it has begun its move to a new environment with a re-launch under the ownership and guidance of Tinopolis Interactive.

Planet Science exists to offer young scientists of school age the inspiration and excitement that will support their study of science at school and beyond. Planet Science is there to support classrooms, curriculum, textbooks and teachers - but not by going over the same ground as they cover. Instead, our mission is to tickle your curiosity, excite your interest, and unleash your passions in science....."

Low-Tech Education

The Waldorf School of the Peninsula sits in the midst of Silicon Valley, home to the nation's leading tech companies and startups. It educates the children of tech gurus and executives of the technological industry. But the school itself teaches without digital assistance.
As schools across the country try to fit the digital era into lessons by experimenting with iPads as textbooks and reverse classroom models, the Waldorf School, a private institution, sticks to its hundred-year-old ways: blackboards and chalk. No computers in elementary grades, and sparse use of technology in high school grades.

An example of a low-tech school...
