CONFERENCE-3E Conference - Inaugural ECSB Entrepreneurship Education Conference

3E Conference - Inaugural ECSB Entrepreneurship Education Conference Aarhus, Denmark on 29–31 May 2013

http://www.3e2013.org/

Welcome to 3E Conference!

The past decades have borne witness to a rapid increase in the offerings of entrepreneurship education across Europe. There is an explicit political agenda both at the national level and at the EU level to promote entrepreneurship education at all levels of the school system because policy makers expect that entrepreneurial skills to be the key to enhancing an innovative culture, which in turn will result in higher competitiveness and economic growth. However, in order to achieving these objectives it is important that educational systems and methods move from traditional to creative, interactive and student-centred educational models that will help change student mindset and prepare students for the challenges of the future.

Through an innovative and untraditional format, the conference establishes a new paradigm for entrepreneurship conferences. It offers an exclusive and engaging opportunity for researchers, educators and politicians to debate and exchange their experiences of the major challenges and advances in enterprise education with a special and unique focus on Europe. Unlike more traditional academic events, the conference will focus on problems and questions rather than on ready-made solutions and presentations of research findings. There will be an award for the best question.

Who should attend: Potential participants include entrepreneurship education researchers, research-based educators from both tertiary and secondary institutions as well as trainers and policy makers.

CONFERENCE- IVth international congress on the anthropological theory of didactics (ATD)

21-26 Apr 2013 Toulouse (France)

CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS OF THE RELATION TO MATHEMATICS AND OTHER KNOWLEDGES AT SCHOOL AND IN SOCIETY

This international conference is organised under the auspices of the IUFM (Institut Universitaire de Formation des Maîtres; teacher professional development institute) Midi-Pyrénées, an affiliated school of the University Toulouse 2, and is supported in particular by [1]:

– The Mixed Unit of Research EFTS (education, professional development, work, knowledge);
– The Research commission of IUFM and especially CCLEPODI (curricula, skills, language, assessment, versatility, didactics of the disciplines, interdisciplinarity);
– The Department MEFST IUFM (professions in education and training in science and technology);
– The ARDM (Association for Research in Didactics of Mathematics).

The scientific focus of the conference
Today, the Anthropological Theory of the Didactical (ATD) holds a strong position on research on the didactics of mathematics as well as the didactics of other disciplines.
Since 2005, three international conferences have been held on this subject. The first was held in Baeza (Spain) in 2005, the second took place in Uzès (France) in 2007, and the third in Sant Hilari Sacalm (Spain) in 2010. The 3rd conference was organised by the Mathematics Research Center of Catalonia, which also published the proceedings.

Like the preceding conferences, this conference brings together researchers who work or wish to work [2] within the frame of ATD with the following objectives:

- Establishing an overview of the results and the progress of ATD concerning both basic research and the development of education and teachers’ training systems ;
- Developing a research programme around the most pertinent open problems, whether related to problems affecting education systems or the development of didactics as a scientific discipline ;
- Identifying and studying the specific problems raised by the extension of ATD conceptual and methodological tools to other fields.

The 4th conference should be of significant importance for symbolic as well as scientific reasons. On the one hand, the awarding of the Hans Freudenthal Medal to Yves Chevallard (awarded at the ICME conference in july 2012 in Seoul) exemplarily marks the prominent role of this research program in the world panorama of didactics of mathematics [3]. On the other hand, it should in particular promote research on the conditions and constraints that affect the current historic crisis which influences school and university mathematics as well as other disciplines in many countries. This crisis is associated with an apparently systematic undervaluation of the contributions of research in the field of didactics, which therefore remains largely unknown.

The Rise of Teaching Machines

At Arizona State University, a high-tech teaching tool with roots in the pre-Internet 1950s has created a bit of a buzz. "I think it's going to be quite good," says Philip Regier, dean of ASU Online. "Looking forward to it," says Arthur Blakemore, senior vice provost of the university. "I'm excited," says Irene Bloom, a senior lecturer in mathematics at the downtown campus.

All are anticipating this summer's debut of Knewton, a new computerized-learning program that features immediate feedback and adaptation to students' learning curves. The concept can be traced back a half-century or so to a "teaching machine" invented by the psychologist B.F. Skinner, then a professor at Harvard University. Based on principles of learning he developed working with pigeons, Skinner came up with a boxlike mechanical device that fed questions to students, rewarding correct answers with fresh academic material; wrong answers simply got them a repeat of the old question. "The student quickly learns to be right," Skinner said.

Learning higher education lessons from China

In the early 1980s, India had quantitatively and qualitatively more infrastructure than China. Until the last decade, India’s higher education outperformed its Chinese counterpart – both quantitatively and qualitatively – and China retained its long-term lead in primary education.

But the situation is altogether different today, as China now dominates in ‘soft infrastructure’ areas too, which include higher education.

Higher education development in India and China closely parallels their economic growth over the past couple of decades.

Higher education in India struggles with moderate reactive growth, whereas China achieves higher growth and is proactive in its goals; in no small measure, this derives from the fact that the Chinese system is more directly focused on quality than India’s.

China is a unique case in higher education development. In 2010 China achieved a gross enrolment ratio of 30% in higher education, up from an abysmally low 3% to 4% in 1990. India barely improved its enrolment ratio in the same 20-year period, moving from less than 10% to 15% enrolment.

But these figures are somewhat misleading because they do not clearly show the effects of India’s population, which is younger than China’s. Fifty percent of India’s population is under 25 years of age and thus has not yet entered the tertiary sector.

Titles are the hardest thing: How can we make them more effective?

James Hartley argues that new large-scale research on titles doesn’t tell us much more than we already know. Effective titles attract and inform readers, and do this in a variety of different ways.
 A colleague in my department thinks that if he uses a colon in the title of an article he is writing then the article will be accepted more readily, and cited more frequently, than if he does not. Where has he got this notion from?  A once carefully qualified statement in some research paper has now become a blind article of faith. True enough there is research on the effectiveness of such colonic titles, but it is not that convincing. But rumour and hearsay are powerful things.

Research on titlesThe research on titles can be summarised as follows:
  • Almost all of the research takes place in the science and medical fields
  • Most of it was done before the advent of electronic counting
  • There is research on the effectiveness of grammatical features, such as colons question marks, the results of which I summarise below, and
  • There is also research on different types of titles, and on which kinds of title readers prefer.

OECD Skills Strategy

The global transformation, often called the "21st century skills" movement is helping move schools closer to learning designs that better prepare students for success in learning, work and life. The OECD Skills Strategy is responding to this by shifting the focus from a quantitative notion of human capital, measured in years of formal education, to the skills people actually acquire, enhance and nurture over their lifetimes.

What’s the Best Way to Encourage Kids?

Around kitchen tables, in school hallways, from the sidelines of playing fields, the exhortations ring out: “You can do it!” “The sky’s the limit!” “Go for the gold!”

Raising the aspirations of children—especially those who are economically disadvantaged—has been a popular prescription for many years, and it’s not hard to see why. What could be wrong with encouraging kids to set their sights high?

But “what has been missing,” write a group of British researchers in a report released last month, “is any evidence that the recommended initiatives actually lead to the outcomes assumed by the policy.” The report, produced for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, reviewed programs designed to bolster students’ goals for the future.

“The widespread emphasis on raising aspirations,” the team concludes, “does not seem to be a good foundation for policy or practice.” What we need, they add, is “a shift in emphasis from ‘raising aspirations’ to ‘keeping aspirations on track. ”

Howard Gardner on Multiple Intelligences

Multiple Intelligences Thrive in Smartville

Take a stroll down the bustling streets of Smartville, USA, and you'll see students bringing mailbags full of letters from the Smartville Post Office to Reading Road and Artistic Avenue. They're working as tellers at the Smartville Savings and Learn, expanding their palates at the Smartville Culinary Arts Institute, and painting and sculpting at the Metropolitan Museum of Smart. Reporters cover local news in the Smartville Times, and clerks at the Little Elephant Depot provide tools that citizens need to do their jobs each day. Learning is the universal occupation here, but everyone in Smartville does that job a little differently.
Smartville is the Enota Multiple Intelligences Academy, a charter elementary school, in Gainesville, Georgia. The nickname embodies the schoolwide philosophy: At Enota, the theory that everyone possesses unique talents and aptitudes isn't just accepted and celebrated, it's an integral part of school culture. Kid-friendly labels for Howard Gardner's eight intelligences -- punchy interpretations like "word smart," "body smart," or "nature smart" -- pervade the school, appearing in hallway signs and classroom conversations. The real-world activities afforded by the school's village persona, staff members say, allow students to explore and express the multiple ways of being smart.

Arvind Gupta: Turning trash into toys for learning

There are really nice alternatives to teach science and design together in schools. It does not cost to much to create supplementary educational  tools and products every time, there are cheap and convenient ways.

Arvind Gupta shares simple yet stunning plans for turning trash into seriously entertaining, well-designed toys that kids can build themselves -- while learning basic principles of science and design.

It is a very inspiring and beautiful presentation.

A Japanese-inspired approach to teaching is expanding in the Bay Area

lesson study
Commonly practiced in Japan, lesson study is a method for helping teachers develop their skills through cycles of collaboration, observation and reflection. A group of teachers designs a lesson and then observes students as it is being delivered. Teachers regroup, assess how the children responded to the lesson and refine it. The idea is for teachers to take the insight gleaned from that research and apply it to their teaching practice.
More information is available at the Silicon Valley Mathematics Initiative website -- www.svmimac.org -- and Mills College's lesson study site: www.lessonresearch.net.
A Japanese-inspired approach to teaching is expanding in the Bay Area
As the national school reform narrative zeros in on rewarding the best teachers and sorting out the bad apples, a quieter effort to shore up the teaching practice has taken root in some Bay Area schools.
It's called "lesson study," a Japanese-inspired teaching model in which groups of teachers plan, observe and refine -- and sometimes, reteach -- a lesson, based on how the children respond to it.
Rather than observing the teacher, research team members (consisting mostly of classroom teachers) train their focus on the students, recording moments of confusion, clarity and enthusiasm before reconvening to dissect the lesson they had created together. The idea is for teachers to take what they've learned from that one lesson and apply it more broadly.
"Often a very subtle difference in the question or the presentation of a lesson can make a huge difference in what children learn from it," said Catherine Lewis, a Mills College education professor who has researched lesson study for more than a decade.

CONFERENCE-ISATT 2013 Conference

ISATT 2013 Conference

16th Biennal Conference on Teachers and Teaching

Excellence of teachers?
Practice, policy, research

The quality of teachers and teacher education is at the forefront of policy and practice related discussions. Decision makers consider "Excellence" in teaching and teacher education as a critical characteristic. At the same time, they put forward new requirements, new competency frameworks, assessment criteria, quality indicators, … they require to be met. But do we need standards for excellence? Where does the urge for excellence in actual educational policy come from, what logic or agenda does it speak for and what are the consequences for how teachers/teacher educators are supposed to think about themselves?

Regulation is a commonly found concept in the fora about teacher quality and teacher education. The question is whether teachers and teacher educators have a "grounded" answer to these changing circumstances? Can we build on an evidence-base about our teacher quality, about the excellence in teacher educators, about the "quality" of our teacher education programs? Can we counter the debate about regulation of the teaching profession with ways that build on self-regulation?

"Excellence of teachers?" as the central theme of the ISATT 2013 conference builds on urgent issues that address practitioners, teacher educators and researchers. In these discussions policy makers can become a partner when we have consistent answers and pathways available. This implies that the teacher and teacher education community should address at least the question about "excellence" themselves.

Bridging the socio-economic divide between public and private schools

Bridging the socio-economic divide between public and private schools

by Marilyn Achiron
Editor, Directorate for Education
Several months ago, we describedhow PISA results show that, when it comes to the question of private versus public schooling, it’s the students who make the school. Both private schools and public schools with student populations from socio-economically advantaged backgrounds benefit the individual students who attend them. But PISA results also showed that there is no evidence to suggest that the proportion of private schools in a country, in and of itself, is associated with higher performance of the school system as a whole.

One Laptop per Child: Disappointing results?

Summary: Is the One Laptop per Child scheme producing the results we expected?
Simply purchasing a device such as a laptop and handing it to a child is unlikely to turn them into the next Zuckerburg. However, it can teach them basic, valuable skills that will assist them when it is time to leave education and support themselves by joining the work force.
At least, this is the view from Peru, where the largest program involving One Laptop per Child, an American charity’s scheme currently operates. Active in more than 30 developing countries across the globe, the aim of the project is to provide children with access to a laptop for educational purposes.
However, according to an evaluation of the scheme’s success by the Inter-American Development Bank(IDB), the results may not be as promising as we may have hoped.
Peru is one of the few places that is currently enjoying an economic boom — but it has one of Latin America’s lowest-ranking educational systems, which no doubt hampers its economic capabilities in a global setting.
After spending $225 million to provide 850,000 laptops across the country, it was hoped that test scores in basic education, such as math and literacy, would improve.

10 Ways to Deal with Difficult Students

We all have those students who are habitually in trouble or are making trouble. This post is for all the teachers who struggle to reach those kids who snarl when you look at them, recoil when you are near them, and refuse to do what they are asked.

Here are ten suggestions on how to deal with these difficult students:

Stay in contact with parents
Make sure they know what is going on; how often he is in trouble, and what trouble it was. Create this bond and you won’t regret it.

Use proximity to limit negative actions
When at all possible, place the student nearest you (hard when you are immersed in PBL) or stay within close proximity to him.
